Tables and figures

Number tables and figures consecutively with Arabic numerals (table 1, figure 1 etc) with a brief caption at the top of a table and under a figure. Tables or figures should not duplicate each other or repeat information presented in text. Tables and figures from other sources should acknowledge that source in a line at the bottom of the table or figure.

Illustrations

In most cases, illustrations will be reduced to fit a column so please ensure that lines and lettering are clear and will not break up when reduced. Capitalize the first letter of the first word only of a label (e.g. Sludge reactor).

Graphs

Use a minimum of text. Variables on axes should be labeled in full with units in parentheses.

Photographs

Provide scanned or digital pictures glossy black and white (grayscale) or color prints.

References

Cite reference in the text by using Arabic numerals in square brackets. If you cite the same reference more than once in the text, use the same number each time. In listing references, try to follow the examples below. Remember that the most important principle in listing references is consistency.

Book reference

[1] Cooper, D. and Champman, C. 1989. Risk analysis for Large Projects. UK: John Wiley.

[2] Chambers, Robert 1983. Rural development, Putting the Last First. UK: Longman Scientific & Technical

Journal Reference

[3] McLaughlin, J.J. 1991. Project managers and decision making. International Journal of project management, Vol.5, No.3:23-31

Acronyms and Translations

Difficulty often occurs in translating acronyms so please follow  the convention of spelling a term out in full the first time it is used followed by the acronyms in parentheses (e.g. an activated sludge reactor (ASR) is ….)
